FHKI Deputy Chairman Dr Roy Chung and National Chair of the Hong Kong-Canada Business Association David Pohl signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Mutual Cooperation (MOU) today (Friday) at Gloucester Luk Kwok Hotel in Wanchai, to further enhance trade co-operation and exchange between the two business associations. The signing ceremony was witnessed by FHKI Chairman Cliff Sun and Canadian Consul General Doreen Steidle.
Cliff Sun says, ¡§Hong Kong and Canada share many similarities historically, which facilitates longstanding ties between their people as well as trade.¡¨ The main objectives of the MOU are:
- the promotion, on an international level, of products of Hong Kong and Canada origin; and - the setting-up of support programmes for companies with a view of promoting their international contacts.
Canada is an important trading partner of Hong Kong ¡V in 2008 the trade volume between the two markets amounted to CAD 5.9 billion. There are about 160 Canadian businesses in Hong Kong, that use Hong Kong mainly as an outpost for doing business with the Mainland and Southeast Asia. There are also about 220,000 Canadian passport-holders living in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong-Canada Business Association (HKCBA) was set up in 1984 and it is the largest bi-lateral trade association in Canada, with approximately 1,500 members in 10 major cities across Canada. HKCBA¡¦s mission is to help its members do business between Hong Kong and Canada, and through Hong Kong into the rest of China and South East Asia. Members of FHKI can promote their products to the Canadian market through the HKCBA and expand sales networks in America.
